I live in the city centre and have found the security for the Queen to be a bit tedious but I do accept that they were necessary. Today the bus routes through the city centre were changed because work was being carried outside the Bank Of Ireland on Dame Street. Sign posts, street lamps and bicycle racks were being removed from College Green ahead of President Obama. It is claimed that all items will be returned on Tuesday when the visit is over.

President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Taoiseach Enda Kenny will take part in a public celebration of his visit at College Green in Dublin on Monday. Mr Obama will address the audience at the end of the entertainment which will involve many well-known Irish artists.

The College Green event will be open to members of the public and is free of charge, with no tickets being required. To facilitate the large number of people expected to attend, security gates will open at 2pm on Monday. The public have been advised to allow plenty of time to get to the event as many streets will be closed to traffic and parking in the city will be greatly limited and it has been suggested that they should use public transport.
Signs and banners along with food and beverages will not be allowed inside the event site but cameras and mobile phones will be permitted.

Belfast City – Useful Notice Telling You How to Lock Your Bicycle
Bicycle Infomatique

The original idea behind the "Streets Of Dublin Project" ( www.streetsofdublin.com ) was to document the changes taking place in the City Of Dublin but the scope of the project has been expanded to include other cities, towns and villages throughout Europe. Recently I had the opportunity to visit the city of Belfast. Next week I visit Cork and towards the end of May I hope to visit Limerick.

Belfast is currently experiencing a tourist boom, being one of the most visited cities in the UK, and the second most visited on the island of Ireland. In 2008, 7.1 million tourists visited the city. There are numerous popular tour bus companies and boat tours running throughout the year. To further enhance the tourist industry in Northern Ireland, the Belfast City Council is currently investing into the complete redevelopment of the Titanic Quarter, which is planned to consist of apartments, hotels, a riverside entertainment district, and a major Titanic-themed attraction. They also hope to invest in a new modern transport system for Belfast, with a cost of £250 million.

Belfast expanded very rapidly from being a market town to becoming an industrial city during the course of the 19th century. Because of this, it is less an agglomeration of villages and towns which have expanded into each other, than other comparable cities. The city expanded to the natural barrier of the hills that surround it, overwhelming other settlements. Consequently, the arterial roads along which this expansion took place (such as the Falls Road or the Newtownards Road) are more significant in defining the districts of the city than nucleated settlements. Belfast remains segregated by walls, commonly known as "peace lines", erected by the British Army after August 1969, and which still divide 14 districts in the inner city.

All the international guides report that the people are very friendly and the city is very safe compared to other cities so if you get a chance you must pay a visit.

The James Joyce Tower was one of a series of Martello towers built to withstand an invasion by Napoleon and now holds a museum devoted to the life and works of James Joyce, who made the tower the setting for the first chapter of his masterpiece, Ulysses.

Beautifully located eight miles south of Dublin on the coast road, this tower is the perfect setting for a museum dedicated to Joyce, a writer of international renown who remains, world-wide, the writer most associated with Dublin.

Joyce’s brief stay here inspired the opening of his great novel Ulysses. The gun platform with its panoramic view, and the living room inside the tower are much as he described them in his book.

The museum’s collection includes letters, photographs, first and rare editions and personal possessions of Joyce, as well as items associated with the Dublin of Ulysses.

Dining in the Docklands is to get a whole lot more interesting as a new wave of restaurants open in the south Docklands in time for summer.

Dieter Bergmann along with Szabi Csitari, Head Chef of the award winning restaurant, the Winding Stair, and Sirin Lewendon, a restaurateur from London, will lead the way with the opening of Riva on Hanover Quay in late April. Seating 70 customers, Riva will offer a continental menu using only organic ingredients and an extensive wine list.

Next door, the Herbstreet Bistro will open in May with dining space for approximately 50 customers inside and 20 more in an outdoor seated area, Herbstreet’s focus will be on simply prepared, good value food in an urban waterfront setting. It will open early for breakfast and serve food all day until 11 pm. The restaurant will be putting a major emphasis on minimising its carbon footprint.

Real Gourmet Burger will offer a range of thirty organic gourmet burgers from Gallery Quay in July 2008. The restaurant will occupy 2000 square feet and accommodate up to 100 customers. This will be the third restaurant for Real Gourmet Burger with the other units located at the Pavilion, Dun Laoghaire and Ballsbridge.

The Crystal Boat, an Asian restaurant specialising in seafood, will also open during the summer period at Gallery Quay. The restaurant will occupy 2,000 square feet over two floors and will accommodate 90 customers.

The new restaurants will join ely hq, Milanos, Bridge Bar and Grill, Il Valentino, KC Peaches and Café Java already trading in the area.

The Grand Canal Dock area is already home to commercial tenants including McCann Fitzgerald, Matheson Ormsby Prentice, Beauchamps, PFPC Bank, Arup Consulting Engineers and Accenture who will be shortly joined by Hong Kong Shanghai Bank.

Grand Canal Square is the centrepiece of the Grand Canal Dock area and was designed by renowned landscape architect, Martha Schwartz. Grand Canal Square’s red glowing angled light sticks and green lighted seating area has brought a significant "wow factor" to the area since its official opening in mid-2007. The Square will be one of the leading architectural and cultural hot-spots in the Docklands.

Facing onto Grand Canal Square will be the 2,200 seater Grand Canal theatre, which was designed by Studio Libeskind and is currently under construction. In addition, a five-star hotel, designed by renowned Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus, is due to be completed later this year and will be operated by Monogram Hotels.

"The Grand Canal Dock area is really coming into its own with a solid range of restaurants and cafes. Ideally located in a busy commercial area and with major cultural and leisure facilities due to open there in 2009, Grand Canal Square will become one of the focal points of the city," said Paul Maloney, Chief Executive of the Docklands Authority.
